What Does An Architect Actually Do?
Ask ten people what an architect does, and you'll probably get ten different answers. Most imagine someone drawing buildings, but that's only part of the job. Our job is to guide a project from the first conversation all the way through construction, helping clients make informed decisions every step of the way. That means helping shape the design, answering questions, coordinating with consultants, and making sure the project stays true to the original vision.
Every project starts with understanding our clients. We meet with the client to discuss their goals, budget, and how the building will be used. From there, early sketches and floor plans begin to take shape. As the design develops, we coordinate with structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers to make sure everything works together. We also have to make sure the project meets building codes, accessibility requirements, and city regulations.
Once the design is complete, we will prepare construction drawings that contractors use to build the project. These drawings include everything from floor plans and wall sections all the way to materiality and dimensions. During construction, we continue to be involved by answering questions, reviewing submittals, visiting the job site, and helping solve any problems that might come up along the way.
One of the biggest parts of being an architect is balancing creativity with practicality. A building might look great on paper, but it also has to stay in line with the client's budget, function well for the people using it, and be realistic to build. Every decision involves finding the right balance between appearance, performance, cost, and long-term durability.
The best projects don't happen because someone drew a beautiful building. They happen because hundreds of decisions were made carefully from start to finish, and that's where an architect provides the most value. Architects help turn ideas into places where people live, work, learn, and gather. Every project is different, which is what makes the profession both challenging and rewarding.
