How Long Does the Design Process Take?

One of the questions we get asked the most is, "How long will this take?" The answer depends on the project. Every building is different, and things like the size of the project, the site, and how quickly decisions are made can all affect the timeline.

While every project is different, most projects move through several predictable phases. We begin with planning and programming, move into design, coordinate with engineers, prepare construction documents, and continue supporting the project during construction. We want to know what you're building, how you'll use it, what your budget is, and what you're hoping to accomplish. Those conversations help us get headed in the right direction before any drawings are started.

Once we begin designing, it's normal for ideas to change. A client may decide they need another office, want a different layout, or realize there's a better way to use the space. Making those changes during design is expected and is much easier than making them once construction has started. As the design comes together, we coordinate with engineers, work through building codes, and prepare the drawings needed for permits and construction. When construction begins, our work isn't over. We stay involved by answering contractor questions, reviewing submittals, and visiting the project as needed.

There's no exact timeline that fits every project, and we'd rather be honest about that than give an estimate that isn't realistic. What we can say is that taking the time to plan the project well at the beginning usually makes everything that comes after go a little smoother.
