In architecture time is money. Because of this, many interns are often tasked with completing the tedious and time consuming tasks that seasoned architects don't have time for in their busy schedules. However, this summer, our interns were tasked with viewing these tasks in a revolutionary light.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to expand its capabilities it is important for architecture firms to begin to use this to their advantage. This is why interns at SGA were asked to identify what aspects of real architecture firm workloads and workflows can be automated or simply expedited through the use of AI. This task was titled "Project Exoskeleton" inspired by the notion performance can be enhanced by AI but the humans behind it all remain at the core of architecture.

 

The internship began by researching current uses, future uses, and most importantly ethical practices of AI in architecture. Throughout the internship the interns created platforms that automate/accelerate the processes for tasks such as:

Construction Document Quality Assurance

Renaming Large Numbers of Files/ Construction Site Images

Organizing Firm Files

Analyzing Stagnant Data from Consultants

Creating Quality AI Renders for Fast Visualization

along with many other prototypes. 

​

Although the internship placed an emphasis on analyzing workflows and how they can be optimized through AI, that was far from the only tasks associated with the job. SGA interns accompanied the team on countless site visits and meetings throughout their time. They also had great opportunities to play a role in schematic design and creating deliverables for client deadlines. They even revamped our current website and more.

Overall, "Project Exoskeleton" was meant to provide not only Sam Garcia Architect with tools that will remain after this class of interns time is complete, but also to provide the interns with the knowledge of architecture workflows they can bring to their future positions.
